Info about Kalyves
Kalyves is located about 20 km east of Chania and is a beautiful coastal town that, together with Almyrida and Plaka, is famous for its lovely beaches, Maistrali and Kyani Akti, both of which have been awarded the Blue Flag. The town stretches along a coastal road lined with houses on both sides, with the sea appearing intermittently on one side.
Kalyves and the surrounding towns have grown into a tourist area, popular especially with British visitors. It is also a place where many people have bought holiday homes and live part of the year.
The beach in Kalyves town (Kalyves Beach) and the nearby beaches are beautiful and known for their clean, clear waters, constantly refreshed by several rivers that flow into the sea. The largest of these rivers, Kyliaris, is an important natural habitat for birds, trout, and turtles.
Kalyves is a quiet and peaceful place, ideal for families with children of all ages, as well as for those who want to explore the Apokoronas region. In addition to the coastal towns of Kalyves and Almyrida, the area is home to many small, picturesque villages where you can truly enjoy life.
Kalyves is situated at the entrance of Souda Bay, in the ancient region of "Ipokoronio", which is believed to have given the Apokoronas area its name. The surroundings are well worth exploring, with highlights such as the church of St. Paraskevi in the town center and an old watermill that once produced hydropower.
Also visit the springs of the Zourpos river and the beautiful beaches formed at the mouths of the Kiliaris and Xydas rivers.
Be sure to visit the village of Stylos, where Samaria water is bottled, or the village of Aptera, which features a Venetian fortress, among other things.
Just 4 km southwest of Kalyves, you'll find the village of Armeni, known for its huge eucalyptus trees, small stone bridges, an old mill, and the church of St. Nicholas.
