Info about Agia Galini

Agia Galini is a charming town on the southern coast of Crete, nestled like an amphitheater down towards the harbor.

The beach is located just outside the town center and consists of coarse sand. The water has many stones, so water shoes are recommended. There are several other beaches around Agia Galini worth visiting, such as the beach in Matala, which is approximately a 30-minute drive away.

Agia Galini offers a selection of excellent taverns, bars, and shops. Accommodation options are reasonable and good, with rooms for two including a private bathroom starting at €30.

Agia Galini is a peaceful town, situated slightly away from the main road from Rethymno, meaning there is no through traffic. During the day, you can relax on the beach, take a dip in the Libyan Sea, or enjoy a hike or bike ride in the nearby beautiful mountains.

In the evening, the streets come alive with tourists dining at the taverns and bars, where seating often spills out onto the streets. The town is also a great destination for a day trip as a break from the more tourist-heavy areas on the northern coast, perhaps with an overnight stay before heading "home" again.

If you rent a car from Chania or Rethymno, you should take the old road from Agia Galini towards Rethymno on one leg of the journey. It offers fantastic views of the entire area, including the Messara Plain. The road has many curves but is not unpleasant to drive.

There are also good opportunities for boat trips from Agia Galini, although they are only available via water taxis, as there are no ferry services from the town.
